The general in charge of Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad’s Special Forces-linked group known as ‘Nafed Assadeddine” toured the corpses of dozens of Islamic State militants killed in Deir ez-Zor, Syria late last week.
In an interview with the pro-Assad Lebanese Press, Major General Issam Zahreddine said he is staying in Deir Ezzor until the siege by ISIS on Assad’s forces has ended.
“Deir Ezzor province and the eastern region in general is the most strategic and important area. It is an oil rich region and it consists of large food resources, as well as a strategic geographic location,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Zahreddine, known as “Lion of the Republican Guard,” is considered the most important commander of Assad’s forces operating in Deir Ezzor.
ISIS has controlled large parts of Deir ez-Zor since 2014.
