Video of woman impaled at border shows how Border Patrol treated her

A woman attempting to illegally enter the US impaled herself on a border fence on Friday, creating a gory spectacle in front of her own children as she placed them in harm’s way.

The 26-year-old Guatemalan woman attempted to scale the fence between Tijuana and San Ysidro, California.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol Agents quickly swept into action, providing medical aid and ensuring the woman -who had just illegally entered the country and placed her children in extreme danger- was not separated from her kids during the transit to the hospital.

“On Nov. 23, at around 8:25 p.m., agents responded to the area and found the woman had fallen from the border wall after she climbed over it to illegally enter the country,” the Border Patrol said in a statement. “The woman landed on rebar that pierced her side and buttocks. Agents rendered aid and requested EMS and the San Diego Fire department for assistance. The woman was also taken to a local hospital and is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.”

San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott referred to the woman as “foolish,” noting that her children might have been left orphaned had medical personnel not gotten to her quickly.

“Entering our country illegally, particularly over our walls is not only dangerous, but also very foolish,” Scott said. “This woman placed her own life and her children’s lives in peril. She could have easily died if not for the quick response by our agents and EMS.”

The area that was breached is part of a 14-mile construction site, which currently consists of old temporary runway mats.

The children -aged three and five years of age- were taken to the hospital in order to be evaluated for potential fall trauma.

A video that was taken by San Diego News Video, an independent news organization captured EMTs and Border Patrol agents bringing the woman and her children to a hospital.  In the video, a border patrol agent can be seen holding and comforting one of the impaled woman’s children.

The US Customs and Border Patrol have been the target of mass media, politicians and celebrities in recent days, particularly after they were forced to use less-lethal devices such as tear gas in order to prevent a mob of individuals from illegally crossing the border and throwing projectiles at Border Patrol agents.
