VFW Post commander busted as a fake Vietnam veteran, arrested for fraud

Earl Skellen

A man from Holley, NY – who’s been passing himself off as a Vietnam veteran- has been charged with scheme to defraud and grand larceny.

Officials with the Orleans County Sheriffs Dept. say 69-year-old Earl Skellen used his position of power, as commander of VFW Post 202, to receive discounted rates on expensive items.

According to 13wham, Skellen was able to purchase a John Deere lawn mower for $500, when the product sold for more than $2,000.

After someone at the VFW post expressed concern about Skellen, an investigation was launched and it was determined that he’d never served in the military before.

Skellen is now being held at the local jail on $1000 bond.
