A US Navy officer based out of Georgia is being sent off to prison after he was found to be part of a child sex trafficking scandal.
Charles Barreras, a Kingsland resident, was sentenced to more than 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted coercion and enticement of a minor.
According to WJCL, Barreras is a lieutenant commander in the Navy, stationed at Submarine Base Kings Bay and was swept up as part of Operation Do You Know Your Neighbor, a 2019 operation coordinated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the GBI’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force played a role in the campaign, which was designed to sniff out and arrest people seeking children for indecent purposes.
Other agencies participated in the investigation, including the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, the Kingsland Police Department, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Savannah Police Department.
There is no parole in the federal system, so Barreras will have plenty of time to think about what he has done.
