American troops were attacked by pro-Syrian regime forces while operating within spitting distance of the Turkish border, resulting in one American sustaining a mild wound- and the Russians watched the entire event unfold without doing anything about it.
The incident took place near a pro-Assad regime security checkpoint, when American vehicles were fired upon by the troops, who were being supervised by Russians at the time.
“After Coalition troops issued a series of warnings and de-escalation attempts, the patrol came under small arms fire from unknown individuals,” Army Colonel Miles Caggins III tweeted on Wednesday. “In self-defense, Coalition troops returned fire. The situation was de-escalated and is under investigation. The Coalition patrol returned to base.”
One Soldier reportedly sustained “a mild superficial scratch while operating their equipment,” and is reportedly “back at work.”
Recently-surfaced video footage of the incident shows the pro-Assad rebels haphazardly firing at the convoy, with signature Turkish geographical landmarks not far away from their location. In the backdrop, Russian military vehicles could be seen parked within walking distance.
The individual who posted the footage to twitter claimed that American F-15s flew over to provide a show of force, dropping flares as they came in low enough for their ordnance to be visible. Photographs were taken and released.
