As many as 120,000 US troops could be in their way to the Middle East, according to Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.
The troop surge, If implemented, would provide enough force to deliver a blow to Iran, who has, been ramping up nuclear operations and rattling sabres against US troops in the area.
The plan was concocted in part by President Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton, though Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, CIA Director Gina Haspel and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats were all present.
According to CNN, there is no plan to invade Iran at this time, though the troop numbers are close to those deployed for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
One US official, when asked if the US would strike nuclear facilities if Iran attempts to weaponize their nuclear material, said “The President has been very clear that when the security of the American people are threatened, all options are on the table.”
The strategy comes only days after B-52 bombers and the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group were sent to the area.
The air and sea task force was sent to the region in response to threats against nearby American troops and the possibility that Iran would back out of the nuclear deal.
The situation is ongoing.
