Officials at Fort Hood, Texas, are investigating the mysterious death of a female Soldier, who was found dead on post.

35-year-old Chaplain’s Assistant Spc. Erica Demetria Atkinson was pronounced dead at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center after her unresponsive body was found elsewhere on the Texas military installation on March 29.

Atkinson joined the Army at an older age than most soldiers, enlisting in 2017. She was assigned to 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (AKA, the “Black Jack Brigade”), 1st Cavalry Division.

According to her Facebook, she is married to an Army infantry squad leader in the 1st Battalion, 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment.

“This is a tremendous loss for the Black Jack Brigade and for the Army,” Col. Jeremy Wilson, commander, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, told KCENT in a statement. “Spc. Atkinson’s selfless service, commitment to the team, and kind spirit will be missed but not forgotten.”

Army Criminal Investigation Command is currently looking into the death, and have not completely ruled out the possibility of the death being a result of foul play.

“I can tell you that at this point in the investigation we don’t have any indications of foul play, but have not completely ruled it out while we conduct a thorough investigation,” CID spokesman Chris Grey said.
