US Army soldier arrested overseas for child porn after being AWOL for six years

A US Army paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne went AWOL for six years after producing child pornography- but his time on the lamb has landed him a dishonorable discharge and an eleven-year sentence, according to Army officials.

Specialist Robert L. Barnett III is now Private Barnett, and was found guilty of desertion, as well as producing and viewing child pornography.

Barnett, who obtained the footage through lewd webcam exchanges between February to October of 2012, fled along with his wife and children to the United Kingdom in late October of 2013 when he got wind that he would be prosecuted.

According to the Army Times, Barnett managed to evade capture for over six years before being turned over to the Americans by British authorities and given a C-17 flight home- all under the watchful eyes of armed military police officers.

During his time in England, Barnett committed several crimes and attempted to elude police.

A former US Marine, Barnett had only served in the 82nd Airborne Division for around a year before making his escape to the British Isles.
