US Army Colonel, wife and civilian contractor facing charges in Fort Gordon corruption scandal

A US Army Colonel, his wife and a defense contractor at Georgia’s Fort Gordon are facing criminal charges for corruption.

55-year-old Colonel Anthony Tyrone Roper, wife Audra and contractor Dwayne Oswald were indicted this week by a federal grand jury for their alleged roles in a bribery, contract-rigging and kickback scheme.

Accused of soliciting and accepting cash bribes in exchange for over 20 million dollars in Army contracts, the trio made arrangements to favor some contracts over others while pocketing the difference.

According to WJBF, the offenders all reside in Augusta, a metropolitan area near Fort Gordon.

Their charges are as follows:

Tyrone Roper

  • One count of conspiracy
  • Three counts of bribery
  • Four counts of false statements
  • One count of obstruction, with a maximum sentence of 85 years in prison and a $1.75 million fine

Audra Roper

  • One count of conspiracy
  • One count of false statements
  • One count of obstruction, with a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine

Dwayne Oswald Fulton

  • One count of conspiracy
  • One count of obstruction, with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine

Fort Gordon Public Affairs could not be reached for comment.

This investigation is reported to be ongoing and has been led by Special Agent Preston T. Johnson of the U. S. Army, Criminal Investigations Division; Special Agent Randall J. Temples of the U. S. Department of Defense, Criminal Investigative Service; and, Special Agent Bryan M. Cofer of the U. S. Small Business Administration, Office of Inspector General.
