Update: 2 in custody; US Army Colonel and his wive “viciously shot and killed up close at point-blank range” out front of their home

Update: Two suspects are in custody following the murder of a US Army medical officer and his retired servicemember wife in suburban Virginia.

Ronnie Marshall, 20, and D’Angelo Strand, 19, were arrested and have been charged with second-degree murder, according to Fairfax County Police.

The capture of the duo is related to the killings of Dr. Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63.

According to NBC4, the arrests were thanks to a tip-off and proper identification of the vehicle’s license plate.

“We’re here because two pillars of our community, of our country, really, we’re gunned down viciously in their own front yard,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference Thursday evening.

The two assailants were coworkers of an individual related to the victims.

The military personnel were gunned down in their front yard, in plain view of family members present.


A manhunt was initiated on Thursday after a US Army colonel and his wife were shot outside of their suburban Virginia home.

The incident took place around 9AM in Fairfax County,  Edward McDaniel Jr. and Brenda McDaniel were gunned down in their yard at point-blank range.

Family members were present during the shooting but were not harmed.

Fairfax County Police are investigating the shooting, and have received information about the assailant. 

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told WUSA9 the victims were “viciously shot and killed up close at point-blank range.”

According to the New York Daily News, witnesses say the shooter fled the scene in a silver or white 2018 Nissan Altima with Maryland tag # 1EF1479.

Two days prior to the shooting, Fairfax County Police officers responded to the same home for a dispute and potential burglary.

The motive is still unclear, but authorities believe the burglary call is connected.
