A US Army Captain was among the eight Americans and 157 people killed when a Boeing 737 crashed on Sunday, going down mere minutes after taking off from an airport in Ethiopia.

Captain Antoine Lewis, a 40-year-old officer in the US Army, was one of those killed when the Ethiopian Airlines MAX 8 model crashed near the Addis Ababa airport.

An Illinois native, Lewis was a veteran of the Afghanistan conflict and leaves behind a wife and teenage son.

According to the WGNTV, Lewis was the third generation in his family to enlist in the military, and rose to the rank of Captain, earning both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.

Lewis was serving in a missionary capacity at the time of the crash and was on his way to Kenya.

A multi-national front is currently investigating the crash, which killed all aboard.
