A 26-year-old soldier stationed out of Fort Hood was found dead near the Texas Army base, officials announced Tuesday.
Pvt. Mejhor Morta, a mechanic from Pensacola, Fla., was found unconscious on July 17 near Stillhouse Hollow Lake, a Bell County reservoir managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fort Worth District.
“The Black Knight family is truly heartbroken by the tragic loss of Private Mejhor Morta. I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones,” Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of 1st Bn. 5th Cav. Regt, said in a statement.
“My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. Private Morta was a great Trooper and this loss is felt by every member within our formation.”
An investigation into his death is underway.
Morta is now the third Fort Hood soldier to be found dead in a month. Officials have ruled the June 21 death of 24-year-old Gregory Morales suspicious, while 20-year-old missing Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was found dead on July 1.
Guillen’s death is still under investigation, but her family says that she was being sexually harassed on base and was afraid to report it, which may have led to her murder.
“She felt so unsafe going to her command to make any kind of report… she knew she may receive harassment or retaliation,” Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, said Tuesday outside the state capitol, where a group of female politicians called for change to the military’s handling of sexual harassment and assaults. “It’s time we put a stop to this. This can never happen again.”
