Special Forces soldier killed in Afghanistan, 17th US service member this year

An American Special Forces operator was killed in Afghanistan earlier today, making him the 17th American service member to die this year.

The unidentified Soldier was assisting Afghan commandos in Wardak Province during an American-led mission, will be formally identified to the public following notification of next-of-kin.

According to The New York Times, the death of the Soldier comes as the Taliban once again renew their vigorous attack against Afghan government and US forces following a collapse in peace talks and the run-up to local elections.

The US is set to surpass the number of airstrikes delivered since its heyday in 2018, targeting Taliban forces across the country.

US Army Green Berets made up the highest number of US troops killed, totaling nine casualties so far.

Last week, President Donald Trump said that the Afghan government “will have to take responsibility” for its own security “at the earliest possible time,” noting that a withdrawal is in the near future.
