No charges will be filed against a North Carolina military wife and mom who shot an intruder in her home Friday morning.

According to WNCN, Robeson County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an alarm activation call at the Lumber Bridge home around 1030 am. The woman who lives there – the wife of a soldier — was out running errands with her toddler at the time.

When the woman returned home she saw a stranger’s car parked in her front yard. She grabbed her gun, which was in her car, went inside and found the intruder “holding her iPad and walking toward her.”

The homeowner shot and killed the man who was later identified as 45-year- old Brian Keith Ratley, who’d recently been put on probation for a felony conviction– according to the NC Dept of Public Safety.

It is not known at this time if her husband is stationed at Fort Bragg, which is only 25 minutes from where the burglary and shooting occurred.

Fort Bragg is one of the largest United States Army installations in the world and home of the 82nd Airborne Division and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Officials say Ratley was convicted of conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses last month.  He’s been in trouble with the law before, with a rap sheet dating back to 1994, according to state records. He’s been convicted of crimes ranging from breaking and entering to larceny and eluding arrest.

Police say when Ratley came to the home in Lumber Bridge Friday morning to burglarize it he was driving a stolen Jeep Wrangler.
