Soldier’s children return from school to find their parents dead from apparent murder-suicide

Staff Sgt. Deveraux Cato

A soldier assigned to Fort Stewart was found dead along with his wife after an apparent murder suicide last week.

Long County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Staff Sgt. Deveraux Cato, 34, and his wife, Sashya Cato.

Their bodies were found in their Ludowici, Georgia home on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

According to a police report, police were dispatched after a neighbor was concerned after witnessing the deceased couple’s two children trying to enter the home around 4 p.m. after returning from school.

The neighbor told the deputies she was concerned because Sashya would normally call her if she could not be home when the children arrived home from school.

After seeing both of the Cato’s cars in the driveways and numerous unsuccessful attempts to reach them, she called the police, according to WTOC.

Deputies attempted to make contact by knocking on the door and were eventually able to enter the residence through a sliding window.

The officers eventually found the bodies after walking around the home.

Investigators believe Deveraux Cato killed his wife and then himself but the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab is still completing its investigation.

According to Fort Stewart Public Information Officer, Kevin Larson, Staff Sgt. Cato was assigned to the 63rd Expeditionary Signal Battalion at Fort Stewart. He was a Multichannel Transmission Systems Operator-Maintainer.

According to WSAV, Sashya was a popular photographer.

The two children are staying with a neighbor and the biological father of one of the children has flown to help.
