Soldier killed during midair helicopter collision is identified

A medical officer from Virginia has been identified as one of the casualties of a midair collision that took place in Georgia.

Capt. James Bellew, of Charlottesville, Virginia, was killed Wednesday morning after the UH-60 he aboard collided with another.

An aeromedical evacuation officer, Bellew was part of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade in the 3rd Infantry Division and was based out of Fort Stewart.

The incident, which took place around 2AM during low-light operations, is currently under investigation.

According to the Star Exponent, Bellew entered the Army in 2017.

“The loss of James is an immeasurable tragedy to his family, friends, crew and fellow soldiers,” 3rd CAB commander Colonel Eric Vanek said in the release. “James was a part of one of the noblest professions imaginable; he dedicated his life to serving our country and did so in a role where he was constantly helping, and saving the lives of others.”
