Controversy is bubbling after a video of a US Army Soldier allegedly dumping two dogs off on the side of the road went viral— but everything isn’t always as it seems.
The video, originally filmed and posted by Ken Creel on social media, shows a woman in uniform returning from the woods to her vehicle, which is stopped in the road.
As the camera pans right, two dogs can be seen in the woods.
“Help me make this lady famous,” Creel wrote in a post. “She just dumped these fur babies on Highway 19 in Bullock county Alabama. When I confronted her she tried to coax back into her car.”
The video went viral, and was shared by numerous entities that included the Army-themed USAWTFM Facebook page.
However, claims have surfaced that the woman in question was actually trying to help the dogs.
Lindsey Garner Kirkland, who is allegedly in a Guard or Reserve component, claimed the Soldier in question was not abandoning dogs.
“She was trying to help them,” she told Creel. “She is in my unit and we had just got back from a 2-day drill.”
According to Kirkland, the Soldier “was headed home today after we were released (she does not live around here) and saw these fur babies in the road. She attempted to stop and give them water out of the water bottle in her hand along with a towel in her hand.”
“It’s easy to make assumptions before knowing the whole story,” she added. “She has five fur babies of her own and she said she knew it was hot and she was trying to help but they wouldn’t come to her. I have known her for many years and this is something she would never partake in.”
While no scenario can be ruled out and it is just as possible that Creel perceived what he was seeing at a closing distance to be what he thought was an abandonment case, the incident is a cautionary tale about “jumping on the bandwagon” on social media— especially when context is lacking.
