A soldier who returned from a deployment to Egypt was arrested in North Augusta on Sunday on a criminal sexual conduct with a minor charge.
Aaron Tafoya, 33, was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the third degree. According to Aiken County Detention Center records, Tafoya has a hold from Fort Gordon.
According to a North Augusta Public Safety incident report, the Georgia Children’s Advocacy Center contacted the agency in reference to an alleged incident on Yardley Drive between 2016 and 2019. A North Augusta officer made contact with a Fort Gordon Military Police Department special agent in February, who stated Tafoya no longer was at Fort Gordon and had been deployed to Egypt.
According to the report, Tafoya forced a 10-year-old boy to have oral sex and watch pornography with him. It is unclear how many times the alleged sexual acts occurred.
During the investigation, the advocacy center discovered the alleged incident had occurred in North Augusta at a home Tafoya was renting on Yardley Drive. On April 16, the special agent told the officer conducting the investigation it was unknown when Tafoya would return from his deployment.
According to the report, the mother of the victim told investigators she wouldn’t notice much at first, but began to see behavioral changes. She told investigators she received a call from his school principal stating Tafoya had sexually abused her son.
A warrant was obtained in April to take Tafoya into custody upon his return to the U.S. Tafoya is being held at Aiken County Detention Center.
According to a statement from Fort Gordon, Tafoya is an active duty soldier, but is not currently stationed at the base. The Fort Gordon Criminal Investigative Division is assisting in the investigation.
