A U.S. service member and one U.S. civilian died as a result of wounds sustained in Afghanistan on Wednesday. One U.S. service member and two U.S. civilians also sustained wounds and are currently stable.
The soldier killed in action is reported to be Sgt. Douglas Riney, a soldier from Fort Hood Texas. He was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.
The civilian has been identified as a Department of Army civilian, Michael G. Sauro, 40, of McAlester, Oklahoma.
Riney is originally from Fairview, Illinois where he was a firefighter, according to family members.
A third generation soldier, his grandfather and father served in the Army before him.
They were shot and killed by an Afghan wearing a military uniform at a base near Kabul, according to the U.S. and Afghan officials.
According to ExpressNews, the gunman is said to have opened fire on the five Americans as they attempted to inspect an Afghan ammunition supply base near Camp Morehead, where Afghan military units are trained for specialized operations
The Pentagon has 9,800 troops deployed in Afghanistan to train and advise Afghan forces and rarely participate in direct combat, according to officials.
