Sailors can get some internet while deployed at sea but it’s often spotty and drops out. The frustrating connectivity is due to security issues. One chief and fellow leaders on the littoral combat ship Manchester had no such issues in 2023 thanks to an illegal satellite dish.

According to the Navy Times, Command Senior Chief Grisel Marrero was relieved of her duties in late 2023 because she mislead and lied about her ship’s command Wi-Fi network.

Marrero conspired with others to have a Starlink Satellite dish installed on the ship. That satellite connection could have compromised the ship’s position.

The Starlink connection was paid for by the conspiring chiefs and senior leadership onboard. They named the network “STINKY.”

The mess crew paid roughly $1,000 a month to Starlink via a private checking account.

A civilian installing an authorized Starsheild satellite communication system notified the Navy of the illegal Starlink dish.
