This secret loophole allows the VA to bill veterans for “free” medical treatment

A little-known law has been allowing the VA to deny paying for veterans’ medical treatment, leaving veterans with large sums owed for visits to the VA medical facilities.  This was the case for Army veteran David Riggs when he visited a Georgia VA emergency room for intense stomach pain that was so bad he couldn’t walk.

After finding out his pain was due to kidney stones he received treatment and a bill from the hospital for $12,186.
