Search is on for sailor who escaped military custody

Authorities in northeast Florida are searching for a sailor who escaped from military custody in Jacksonville.

First Coast News reports the sailor was supposed to be serving aboard the USS Iwo Jima.  A U.S. Navy official says the sailor, whose name was not released, had gone absent without leave. He was being taken to a pre-trial detention hearing on Wednesday afternoon when he escaped.

Officials say he ran into Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park.

They say he poses no threat to the public.

No further details were immediately available.
