Last week a member of the Russian Special Forces was reportedly killed near Palmyra in Syria.
The Russian officer was apparently surrounded by ISIS fighters and is being hailed as a hero for his actions. The officer was tasked with “identifying crucial IS targets and passing exact coordinates for strikes with Russian planes,” according to a Russian military representative.
His role in a Special Operations capacity is similar to that of an U.S. Air Force Combat Controller (CCT) which serve with U.S. special operations units to coordinate air attacks.
The Russian officer had been conducting his mission behind enemy lines for about a week when he drew direct Russian airstrikes onto his position.
The news of his death comes just a week after five Russian Special Forces soldiers were killed by ISIS in the same area of Syria.
ISIS claimed responsibility for their deaths by posting pictures from the Russian’s cellphones as well as a video of a dead Russian soldier and his equipment.
