A US soldier revealed that his recruiter was able to get him a contract in the Army— one that allowed him to enter the service with only one toe.
A video, posted by Sergeant First Class Perez, an Army recruiter in Alabama, shows a Soldier being goaded into taking off his boot.
Upon doing so, a foot with a single digit became visible, meaning that he was allowed to enlist- despite missing all but one toe on his foot.
Previously, such a condition would have been cause for disqualification and being barred from serving.
However, the service member apparently received a waiver.
“If you’ve been disqualified for a medical condition in the past,” Perez said. “Let’s see what we can do!”
While the details cannot be fleshed out based solely on the limited information provided by the video, such an oversight may indicate just have desperate the military is for recruits.
As of June 7, the Army is on track to hit its recruiting goal after several consecutive fiscal years of only pulling in around three-fourths of recruiting target numbers.
In April, the Army was at around 99% of its recruiting goal, and the news was somewhat of a relief for such a large branch of the Armed Forces.
