Anthony Berg is one lucky man. Or, was it his date to the Adult Video News awards that was the lucky one?
Berg, a sergeant in the Army Reserve who spent eight years on active duty, was selected out of a pool of about 250, to attend the annual AVN Awards in Las Vegas. That wasn’t all – he was being flown in to Sin City to escort actress Mercedes Carrera to the event. Berg was one of five finalists selected by Carrera herself and eventually chosen as the winner of the contest by a few of her associates in the industry.
A unit supply specialist, Berg served in Iraq for more than a year with 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, out of Fort Hood, Texas. He returned in early 2008.
“He’s kind of your everyday soldier,” Carrera said. “He’s not Rambo. It wasn’t about that.”
Carrera added that Berg’s wife– who also got a free ticket to Vegas– was on board with the whole thing and that affected her decision. “I loved that his wife was very supportive,” Carrera said. “I didn’t want it to be a thing where people would be like, ‘Yeah, Mercedes totally effed this guy.’ That’s not why I was doing it. I certainly don’t want to cause any marital problems. That’s my own personal code of ethics.”
After receiving news that he would be her date, Berg worried about what he’d wear to the red-carpet event. “My big question [to superiors in his Appleton, Wisconsin-based Reserve unit] was, ‘Is it going to be a problem if I wear my dress uniform?'” he said. “They didn’t see a problem with it.”
According to Marine Corps Times, Berg began following Carrera online “in part because of her support for veterans causes.” While certainly not the only fan in uniform, Berg is “a real fan of the industry.”
He said, “Sometimes videos get traded among guys. It’s nothing that’s out of control. They watch it in the privacy of their own … thing. I don’t think it’s something that should have too much of a stigma on it.”
While Berg did receive some backlash on social media for attending the event (in uniform), he says he talked to some of his old buddies from other units and they told him ‘not to worry about it.’
Carrera is clearly very beautiful and and she seems to speak from the heart during her three-minute-long video invite, that she posted to YouTube months before the event. Carrera said she counts service members among her strongest supporters. She comes from a family of veterans – her father served in Vietnam – and she knows all too well how much these men and women sacrifice for their country.
“It was just a cool experience to see people thank him for his service,” she said. “For me, that was meaningful in a totally selfish way. That’s the kind of reception I wish my father had gotten when he came back.”
