Palm Bay Police received a call Tuesday morning about a man making threats to a construction crew working next door to his home. Officers blocked off the roads of the residential area, around the 12-thousand block of Mariposa Drive in Brevard County, Florida.

A two-hour standoff with the suspect followed.

Police identified the man making the threats as 38-yr-old Dimitri Corcino– a security specialist and Army veteran with “extensive military and law enforcement training.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Corcino was a police officer for the Dept. of Veterans Affairs for seven years and served in the Army for 18 years.

Corcino’s girlfriend told WFTV, she was “robbed of any chance at making the situation better” and that “she didn’t have the chance to talk to him and try and save his life either.”

Cpl. Jason McCoy with the Palm Bay Police Dept. fired one shot, killing Corcino, after he exited his home with a loaded handgun. Corcino had been arrested before for aggravated battery, disorderly intoxication and DUI.

He had apparently been suffering from mental health issues, including schizophrenia and PTSD, his girlfriend said.
