Police in Texas are offering $20,000 for any information that leads to an arrest related to the grisly murder of an 84-year-old Korean War veteran, who was shot while going for a walk in his own neighborhood.
Baytown Police say that veteran Sam Wingate was walking with his friend, a morning ritual for Wingate that had been going on for several years.
During the morning stroll, Wingate was reportedly shot in the back, incapacitating him immediately.
Wingate was quickly flown to an advanced trauma care hospital and initially survived, albeit paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to walk again, he told doctors that he would one day walk out of the hospital.
However, Wingate would succumb to his wounds several days later, devastating the community who revered him as a “respected member” if the Pinehurst Subdivision.
“Sam Wingate was senselessly shot in the back,” the Baytown Police wrote on Facebook. “A cowardly act .”
Since the shooting, Baytown Police have been working around the clock to identify a vehicle believed to have been used by the shooters, and while they have received several tips, none have been particularly useful.
Upping the ante, BPD is now offering a $20,000 for any information that leads to the capture of those involved in Wingate’s execution.
During the Korean War, Wingate served in the United States Navy. He leaves behind a wife, two children, several grandchildren and two brothers.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the family is requesting that people refrain from buying flowers and donate to the Baytown Police Crime Stoppers program.
The investigation is ongoing.
