Police arrest wife, one other for the murder of a US Army soldier home on leave

Police have arrested two suspects for the murder of a South Korea-based US Army Soldier who was killed while celebrating the holidays back home in Michigan.

23-year-old Tyrone Hassel III was shot multiple times on Colfax Avenue, which runs through the neighboring small towns of Benton Harbor and Fair Plain. Witnesses claim they heard five or six gunshots, followed by the squealing of tires as the shooter fled.

“They were just getting ready to do a cooking at the cousin’s house, I think it was. [Hassel] just came home to feed somebody,” said neighbor Willie Gaddy. “[He] brought a plate, walked out the door, and this happened to him. ”

Hassell would die of his wounds after he was taken to the hospital.

“When we came home, we noticed all the police cars lined up and we saw the coroner’s truck and my heart just went out to the mom and dad,” said Gaddy’s wife, Althea.

Hassell’s father was reportedly in shock and was consoled by his neighbors.

“They’re grieving,” Gaddy told WNDU. “So, we grieve with them.”

The St. Joseph Township Police Department has been handling the investigation and has identified Hassel’s wife,  22-year-old Army Spc. Kemia Nekenah Hassel as one of the suspects arrested.

Police did not identify the other person arrested but they did say there were able to make the arrests from a tip.

According to Stars and Stripes, Berrien County Prosecutor Mike Sepic will release more information Monday.
