If you’ve been at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for any length of time you are probably aware that parts of the base burn almost every year. Even in years without natural wildfires, crews will sometimes conduct controlled burns to minimize the impact of future wildfires. However, this year’s wildfires at Camp Pendleton, and elsewhere in California, have been particularly troublesome due to ongoing drought conditions. The so-called Tomahawk fire, in the northeast section of Camp Pendleton, has burned more than 6,000 acres forcing evacuations of housing areas on base and various schools both on and off base.
