Catherine Byrne, the mother of an Air Force staff sergeant, was booed at a town hall for Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence after saying, “time and time again Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans and his disrespect for Mr. Kahn and his family is just an example.”
She directly asked Mike Pence, “You have a son in the military, how do you tolerate this disrespect?,” before holding up a picture of her son to the crowd.
Pence responded by thanking her for the question and saying, “Folks, that’s what freedom looks like and freedom sounds like.” After a brief applause from the crowd, he continued to say, “Let me just say first I want to honor your son’s service to the country and your family’s service to the country, I truly do.”
After acknowledging Khan’s heroism and sacrifice to the nation, he went on to claim that Trump supports veterans “like no other leader in my lifetime.”
“The only other thing I would say to you is having spent time with our nominee, I have never been around someone more devoted to the armed forces of this country, more devoted to the families of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marine and coast guard and no one more devoted to the veterans in this country,” he said.
Catherine Byrne’s son, Raymond Harmon, is stationed in the United Arab Emirates -his second deployment. The 27-year-old staff sergeant was deployed to Iraq in 2009 and 2010, according to NBC.
