Naval Adm. William H. McRaven has been a member of SEAL Team 6, former deputy commander for operations at JSOC, Commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group 1, Commander of SEAL Team 3, task group commander in the CENTCOM area of responsibility, task unit commander during the Persian Gulf War, squadron commander at Naval Special Warfare Development Group.
In 2011 he was appointed to the rank of admiral and as the ninth Commander of USSOCOM at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Since then he has been credited for organizing and overseeing the special operations mission, Operation Neptune Spear, that raided Osama bin Laden’s compound on May 2, 2011.
A few months before his retirement in 2104 he was asked to give the graduation commencement speech at his alma mater, The University of Texas. He was also selected to be the Chancellor of the University of Texas System in July of 2014.
