Navy sailor shot, killed in off-base Air Force housing has been identified

A US Navy Seabee was reportedly shot and killed in Mississippi Saturday, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are currently investigating her death.

Seaman Grace Kayla Davis-Marcheschi was a Builder Constructionman and assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, based in Gulfport.

The Oregonian native was shot at an off-base military housing area managed by Keesler Air Force Base.

According to the Sun Herald, Davis-Marcheschi was relatively new to the Navy and had only been assigned to NMCB 133 since January. At the time of her death, she worked for the Naval Construction Battalion Center- Gulfport in a temporary security assignment.

NCBC-Gulfport is home to the Navy’s entire Atlantic fleet of Seabees, which perform most of the Navy’s construction roles and have a long tradition of performing their duties- even in the heat of battle.

The center’s Public Affairs Officer, Brian Lamar, said that NCIS is handling the investigation and that “no further information regarding the circumstances of death is available.”

Commanding Officer Captain Bill Whitmire offered his condolences.

Last week, an USAF servicemember stationed at Keesler under the 81st Training Wing was found dead on base, though few details were released.
