A lieutenant commander in the United States Navy is in custody after being caught up in a child sex sting.

Christopher Paul Hetherington, 33, was arrested on December 21 in Virginia.

The Norfolk-based officer, who serves aboard the USS Ross, was charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and attempted production of child pornography.

The sting operation was part of a joint venture between various law enforcement agencies, though NCIS had set the bait.

According to WAVY, NCIS special agent posed as a high schooler on social media. When Hetherington contacted the “minor,” he used explicit language and arranged to meet.

Hetherington is currently being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail, with a court date set for today.
