Marines Corps follows Navy’s decision to make changes to the physical fitness test

The Commandant of the Marine Corps has followed the Navy’s changed to their physical fitness test by approving the plank as an alternative to crunches in physical fitness tests.

The new test will require Marines of all ages and genders to hold a plank for four minutes and 20 seconds in order to top out their score.

According to the Marine Corps Times, the Marine Corps is no stranger to complaints regarding crunches, which can cause injury.

The new scoring matrix and other information will be released in a forthcoming administrative memo.

The US Navy was the first to announce they would be adopting the planks, replacing the sit up in their Physical Readiness Test, or PRT.

The Navy is expected to formally implement the core exercise sometime around 2020.
