A Marine has been detained after another Marine was found dead at Camp Lejeune.
The unidentified Marine was taken into custody by authorities around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday after an incident that occurred in a barracks room on the base, a released statement from the base said.
While details are limited, the statement said the Marine’s death was a homicide and said the Marine in custody is a suspect but did not state how the Marine died.
According to ABC, “the death came two days before the base was scheduled to conduct annual training known as Exercise Urgent Response that ‘provides an opportunity for tenant commands to develop and exercise emergency security procedures,’ according to a press release.”
According to an unofficial report on social media, the Marine in custody is Jesse Thomas Bopp and he allegedly shot a Marine assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines.
“What happened with the dude from Camp Lejeune is he just bought a gun was showing his friends and they were playing around with it they didnt clear and without thinking he pulled the trigger shot the dude in the head(confirmed dead),” an unidentified Marine told NotinRegz.
In 2021, a Marine at Camp Lejeune from the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, was hospitalized after being shot by a fellow Marine in the barracks.
Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility with 14 miles of beaches in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
