Marine found dead at Camp Pendleton range

A crewman qualification training instructor tests his night vision equipment before conducting night weapons training on a remote range at Camp Pendleton. Crewman qualification training is a 14-week advanced training course teaching basic weapons, seamanship, first aid and small unit tactics to special warfare combatant-craft crewman candidates.

A Marine at Camp Pendleton was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head early on Monday.  Officials said the Marine was on a Marksmanship range conducting live fire exercises with his unit, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

The exact cause of his death has not been released and are currently under investigation.  The name of the Marine will be withheld for at least 24 hours to ensure that family members have been notified.

The LA Times reports that no other Marines were injured or threatened during the incident.
