The Marine Corps has announced that a female has become the first to sign a Marine infantry contract, but won’t head to bootcamp until later this year.

The 19-year-old female has entered into the delayed entry program, according to a spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruiting command.

Her specific military occupational specialty (MOS) has yet to be determined but she will be entering the 0300 (Marine infantry job identifier) field. Whether she becomes a rifleman (0311), a reconnaissance man (0321), or any of the other infantry jobs is up to the needs of the Marine Corps after she reports to the School of Infantry training in Camp Geiger, North Carolina.

The recruit who wishes to remain anonymous -declining to speak to the media- ships to recruit training sometime between October and December of this year, according to

For her to qualify for her contract she was required to pass an enhanced initial strength test (IST) including a mile-and-a-half run, three pull-ups, an ammunition can lift and crunches. While in training she will be required to pass a more difficult strength test that will require her to complete six pull-ups, unlike non-infantry females who can opt to do a flexed-arm hang.

If she or any recruits fail these tests they run the risk of being reclassified into another job outside of the infantry.
