Marine arrested for murdering another Marine’s wife 37 years ago

A Marine veteran has been arrested for the murder of another Marine’s wife in 1979.

Roger Pollard appeared in court on Monday for the first time since his arrest.  He has been charged with the murder of Karen Johnson, 20, in her North Carolina home.

Authorities accuse Pollard of beating and strangling Johnson to death on April 19, 1979.  Karen’s husband, Gary Johnson, was also a Marine who happened to be deployed at the time of the murder.

According to WCTI12, Gary and Roger were in the same Marine unit at Camp Lejeune and also knew each other from a previous duty station in Alaska.

In 1979, Pollard was a person of interest in the murder but authorities lacked the evidence to file charges against him.  According to investigators, more evidence, witnesses, and advancements in technology led to the arrest of Pollard thirty seven years later.

At the time of the arrest Pollard was living in Chesapeake, Virginia but he was brought back to Onslow County, North Carolina to be charged with one open count of murder.

He has been at the Onslow County jail without bond since Friday and it set to appear in court again on May 26.
