Man killed in California identified as a Marine

A US Marine serving on active duty in California was killed in a two-vehicle crash on a main road in Oceanside Sunday night.

The accident happened around 7:50 PM at the intersection of Douglas Drive and N River Road, according to the Oceanside Police Department (OPD). The crash involved a motorcycle and a white Volkswagen sedan.

Sgt. Clint Bussey from the OPD Traffic Services Unit stated that the collision occurred when the Volkswagen turned left from northbound Douglas Drive into the AMPM gas station, hitting the right front fender of the motorcycle, which was going southbound on Douglas.

The motorcyclist, identified by Bussey as a 20-year-old Marine, was thrown from his bike and suffered fatal injuries. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is informed, Bussey said.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 64-year-old woman from Carlsbad, was not injured. She stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. So far, police have determined that driving under the influence was not a factor for the Volkswagen driver, according to Bussey.

All southbound lanes of Douglas Drive were closed temporarily after the crash. By 10:30 PM, one lane was still closed as investigators remained on the scene.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Officer Kevin Lissner with OPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team at 760-435-4651.

According to FOX 5, the community is grieving the loss of the young Marine, and have offered their collective condolences.
