A British dog walker came across a curious discovery while walking along the beach on the Isle of Jersey- the “confidential” cover of a manual pertaining to the nuclear reactors on the Nimitz class of supercarriers.
Ian Le Breton was walking his pint-sized pooch when he came across a hard-cover to a US Navy nuclear manual, which outlined casualty procedures in the event damage came to either A4W/A1G nuclear reactor onboard
A retired customs officer, Le Breton had no idea that the supercarriers have frequented the English Channel on many occasions.
“I can’t imagine one of these carriers just popping into the English channel,” he told Yahoo! news.
The manual cover is marked “NOFORN,” which stands for “NO FOReign Nationals,” and is marked “confidential.”
While Le Breton initially believed the item was from World War II, it’s actually much younger- the first Nimitz-class carrier was launched in May of 1972, while the last one was launched in 2006.
The possible ex-owners of the manual include the Nimitz, the Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Carl Vinson, the Theodore Roosevelt, the Abraham Lincoln, the George Washington, the John C. Stennis, the Harry S. Truman, the Ronald Reagan and the George H.W. Bush, though only a few of these ships have ever been assigned to the Atlantic Fleet
