After more than a year into an archaeological survey, historians have found a historic black cemetery on the grounds of Tampa’s MacDill Air Force Base.
According to Spectrum News, Tampa Bay History Center informed leadership at the base that there may be a cemetery on their land in 2019. The formal survey started in 2022 and finished up in 2023, and the AFB released some of its findings.
The base identified 58 of the 63 graves, with some dating back to the late 1800s.
Historians used radar, cadaver dogs, and historical records to find the graves because they did not have formal markings.
The base did not confirm whether they would attempt to relocate the remains.
MacDill needs its north side to be surveyed for graves as well. Command says it starts this year and be complete in 2025.
