The grave of Medal of Honor recipient MSG Gary Gordon has reportedly been defaced, and authorities are asking the public for help.
The grave, which is in the town of Lincoln, Maine, belongs to the Delta Force operator who was part of a two-man team of volunteers- brave men who attempted to rescue Mike Durant after his helicopter was shot down over Somalia during Operation Gothic Serpent.
Gary Gordon was depicted by actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down.
“It’s with an extremely heavy heart, we’re asking for your assistance again,” Lincoln Police wrote on Facebook. “MSG Gary Gordon is not only a hometown hero for Lincoln, he’s an American Hero!! This vandalism to his gravestone is believed to have occurred sometime within the last 2 weeks.”
Some have speculated that the defacing of the headstone, which is now smeared with what appears to be gold spraypaint, might have been a failed attempt at a good gesture.
“There has been talk that this may have been done as an additional honor, where Medal of Honor recipients have gold, inlaid to the engravings and that this is still a work in progress,” LPD wrote. “If that is the case, the family was never notified that this was happening.”
LPD have urged anyone with any information to notify them at 207-794-2221.
