A record setting quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist, who played for the Air Force Academy, has been killed in a tragic accident in Georgia.

Michael Dowis, 48, was apparently driving the wrong way on Interstate 85 when he was killed on Monday morning.  According to Gwinnett County Police, as he was attempting to turn around in the center median he was struck on the driver’s side door by 22-year-old Jeremy Weiss.

Authorities say Dowis died at the scene and Weiss was transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Dowis, a native of Royston, Ga., was a 1990 graduate of the Academy and was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Falcons.  He finished sixth-place for the Heisman Trophy award – the highest of any Air Force player, according to the Falcon’s website.

“Dowis was also awarded the Downtown Athletic Club’s Exemplary Player Award in 1989. Dowis earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1989 while being named the Western Athletic Conference’s offensive player of the year. In 1989, he became the fifth player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over a 1,000 yards in the same season while leading Air Force to a Liberty Bowl appearance. Dowis scored a school-record six touchdowns and rushed for a then-school record 249 yards vs. San Diego State in 1989.”

“Pound for pound, he was one of the greatest, most gifted and talented players to have played the college game,” former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry told the Colorado Springs Gazette. “Everybody in America had so much respect for him. And as great a player as he was, he was even a greater friend. His life never was about himself. All he wanted in life was to give back. This is just so tragic.”
