Gay Sailor’s husband nominated for ‘Military Spouse of the Year’

For the first time at Naval Base Coronado a homosexual spouse of a Sailor has been nominated for the military spouse of the year.

Brian Alvarado is the husband of Matthew Alvarado who is an active duty sailor with over 17 years of service.

According to 10News, the two met online just two years ago, but a lot has happened at the San Diego naval base since then.

Brian is credited with transforming the unit’s family readiness group from a “wives club” into a real family readiness group.

Before he arrived the wives mostly just met for facials and manicures.  According to Matthew, Brian “prepared them for sudden deployment, tsunamis and lockdowns.”

During an interview for the ‘military spouse of the year’ Brian said, “One of the best aspects of being in the military family for me is to be able to work with the service members and families. Being able to help educate spouses on education and career planning, being able to build lifelong friendships, and do contribute where I can. These things are some of the things I take the most pride in in my life.”

Editor’s note: It was first reported that Brian Alvarado is the first gay nominee but this was incorrect.  He is the first homosexual nominee from Naval Base Coronado.
