Four soldiers injured after Humvee flips on NJ highway, one leg amputated


Four have been seriously injured after their Humvee overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Video from the scene in South Brunswick shows the wrecked vehicle upside down with one wheel missing.

Motorists tried in vain to lift the vehicle off the trapped before firefighters managed to free them.

Boyd Smith told local CBS2 how he and others tried to rescue the .

“So we jumped out and tried to intervene and help out and there was a guy there who was like ‘nah, we can’t move it, we have to wait for the jaws of life or something,” he said.

The injured – three men and a woman – are from the Reserves Unit 533rd Brigade Support Battalion stationed at Fort Totten in Queens, New York.

Police said the woman had a leg amputated in the wreck.

Flipped Humvee

Michael Watsey, who witnessed the accident, wrote on Twitter: “I can not believe that three of our brave almost died because the trucks tyre broke off.

“A young female just lost her leg. I’m sick.”

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
