A servicemember based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was killed over the weekend, according to 101st Airborne Division officials.

Specialist Johsua Burks was found dead in Olmstead on Saturday, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

Burks, who hails from California, served in the 101st Airborne’s 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and enlisted in 2020.

“Saturday morning, we lost a valued member of our formation. The entire team shares in the sorrow and grief felt by his family and loved ones,” said LTC Edmund A. Guy III, 2-44 ADA Battalion commander. “We must not forget the valuable contributions Spc. Burks made to his country and the impact he had on those around him in our unit.”

According to WKRN, Burks was nearly 200 miles northeast of Fort Campbell at the time of his death, close to the Kentucky/Ohio border.

Burks’ wife, Jessica posted about the loss of her husband and her grief on Facebook over the weekend.

“Today my husband was shot and killed I couldn’t believe it and I still can’t words are indescribable of how I’m feeling,” she wrote. “The only thought I had in my head was that he was gone and I’d never see my love my best friend ever again. Worst of all I thought about my baby boy my son who would grow up without his amazing daddy.”

Army officials say they are working with local authorities in the investigation.
