FBI screening National Guard troops in D.C. because 75% allegedly voted for Trump

Democratic lawmakers and Federal authorities appear hell-bent on weeding out conservative-leaning Army National Guard members stationed in Washington, DC, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation now vetting all of the 25,000 National Guard troops on the ground.

The investigation follows remarks by lawmakers and defense officials, who expressed concern that “insurrectionist” conservatives will try and disrupt the transition of power from Presiden Donald J. Trump to President-Elect Joe Biden.

Among those concerned and calling for a purge of the ranks is Democratic congressman Steve Cohen, who suggested that Trump supporters within the National Guard may “want to do something” to Biden.

Naturally, race and sex played a factor in his line of thinking.

“The National Guard is 90 some-odd percent male, and only about 20 percent of white males voted for Biden,” he told CNN. “You’ve got to figure that in the Guard, which is predominantly more conservative … they’re probably not more than 25 percent of the people there protecting us that voted for Biden. The other 75 percent are in the large class of folks that might want to do something.”

In response, CNN Anchor Jim Sciutto stated that simply being conservative or having voted for President Trump does not make a servicememember a threat.

“I mean, to have voted for Trump does not make you an insider threat,” he said. “I’m curious, is there anything you’ve seen to substantiate just how broad this insider threat might be, if it exists?”

Cohen had nothing to provide in the way of evidence.

“You draw a circle, the first circle is people who worked for Trump and not for Biden, as far as people who would be in the zone of folks who you would be suspect of,” he said. “The suspect group is large.”

The exchange was recorded an quickly made its rounds on social media, including Twitter.

Needless to say, the comments were not well-recieved by many.

“Preemptively judging members of the military as security hazards based purely on the fact that they’re white and male seems obviously and intensely stupid and dangerous to me,” wrote conservative writer Andrew Egger on Twitter.

According to Forbes, while the FBI is conducting background vetting on the Guardsmen assigned to the DC area, Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller said in a statement on Monday that there’s “no intelligence indicating an insider threat,” and that the vetting “is normal for military support to large security events.”
