Fallen soldier’s ashes become part of Freedom Rock mural

In September of 2008, Sophie Cox lost her father Staff Sgt. Nathan Cox when his vehicle encountered an I.E.D. in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan.  SSG Cox was thirty two years old at the time and the 68th person from Iowa to die in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Six years later, Sohie along with her mother and grandmother, decided to honor their fallen hero in a way that will last forever.

Ray Sorenson, the creator of the Freedom Rock, has been painting large rocks in every county of Iowa to honor veterans.  His most recent piece was in Scott County, Iowa where the Cox’s reside.  They saw this as a perfect opportunity to honor their hero within this piece of art.

Sophie cox added the last brush strokes to this freedom rock with a special paint that contained her father’s ashes.
