A concert promoter has seemingly found a way to legally discriminate against those who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine.
Promoter Paul Williams takes credit for listing tickets for a concert at VFW Post #39 in St. Petersburg, Florida for $999, but with a discount for those who show proof of receiving a vaccine.
With a vaccine certificate, tickets only cost $18 in advance, or $20 at the door.
“We’re just trying to do a show safely. And they should go out and get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families and their community,” Williams said to ABC.
Williams’ ticket pricing is likely an attempt to circumvent Florida law which bans vaccine passports.
The ban was first signed as an executive order by Governor Ron DeSantis but earlier this month a bill he signed went into effect.
“Under no circumstances will the state be asking you to show proof of vaccination and I don’t think private companies should be doing that either,” said Gov. DeSantis. “If you want to go to an event, go to an event. If you don’t, don’t. But to be requiring people to provide all this proof, that’s not how you get society back to normal.”
Williams assures he is not attempting to ban those who are not vaccinated from the concert headlined by Teenage Bottlerocket and featuring the bands Make War and Rutterkin.
“We’re gonna let them in, we’re not gonna out them,” Williams said when referring to those who pay $999 a ticket. “Nobody’s gonna know that they’re the person that bought the ticket and they’ll be treated just like everyone else.”
While the VFW did promote the event’s “vaccine discount” on their Facebook page, it does not appear ABC action news reached out for comment.
Post #39 claims to be the first VFW Post established south of the Mason-Dixon Line and “still the oldest in the South.”
When asked about tickets sales, Williams said he has not yet sold any “full-price” tickets.
