The United States Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft has a maximum payload of 170,900 pounds, enabling the craft to transport heavy equipment such as the 69-ton M1 Abrams main battle tank. The C-17 is 174 feet long and has a wingspan of about 170 feet. The aircraft is designed to operate from runways as short as 3,500 feet and as narrow as 90 feet, and can operate from unpaved, unimproved runways.
